Question

Can I access the law library's online resources if there's a paywall?

When I try to access articles from off-campus or from a Google Scholar search, I often hit a paywall or an error page saying I'm not authorized.  Do I have to be on campus or go through Primo to read articles in the law library's online collections?

Answer

Off Campus Access

The law library provides access to many resources that can be viewed online from anywhere, for current law students, faculty, and staff.  On campus, your access is seamless.  Off campus, you may need to take an extra step to authenticate to IP restricted resources.

Primo

We always recommend using permalinks from the Primo catalog, the A-Z Database list, and our research guides when saving, sharing, or posting resources.  Links from the catalog are configured to authenticate you to resources automatically, even when you're off campus.

Proxy Prefix

If you are trying to access a saved or shared link from outside the catalog, or content behind a paywall and want to check to see if the library provides access, you'll need to add our proxy prefix to the link URL.  Paste this prefix in front of the resource URL in your browser's address bar:

https://library.lcproxy.org/login?url=[resource URL]

With the proxy prefix in place, you'll be redirected to the L&C login page.  Enter your L&C username and password to be redirected to the resource as an authenticated user.

Bookmarklet

We've created a helpful bookmarklet that, when clicked, will reload a page with our proxy prefix.

To install the bookmarklet, enable your browser's bookmarks toolbar, then drag the button below to your bookmarks bar:

Reload via LC Library

To use the bookmarklet, navigate to the resource page you would like to access, then click the bookmarklet to reload the page with the proxy prefix.  Sign in when prompted, then you'll be on your way.  The bookmarklet doesn't work for all pages.  If you try it and get an error message, it could indicate the library doesn't hold a license for the item you're attempting to view.  Contact the law library with questions or if you need further assistance.
