Food for Fines

Explains the law library process and procedures for Circulation Assitants accepting food for fines

Answer

At the end of Fall and Spring semesters, Boley Law Library will eliminate fines and fees for comparable food donations. We accept unopened, non-perishable human, dog, and cat food. Students with fines can bring in those non-perishables, calculate the estimated value, and let the circulation desk know their name, email, student ID number, and approximate value of your donation. We will then remove that amount from the fine or fee you owe the law library.

When it comes to calculating the estimated value, we ask that students self report within reason.

Example:

"I have $5 worth of canned peaches here and would like that applied towards my $25 in library fines."

Or

“I have 3 cans of unexpired, un-opened dog food worth about $12, and would like that applied towards my fines”

Not

"I have one can of expired caviar worth $200 and would like that applied towards my $200 in library fines."

Or

“I have a single can of Fancy Feast valued at $20 and would like that applied toward my fines”

When a student wants to waive their fine with food, use the “Food for Fines” list in the labeled manilla folder to take down the student’s Name, Email, Student ID #, and $ amount of their donation (a supervisor will check “Cleared in Alma” once they have had a chance to wipe the fines from the student’s account).

Supervisors will regularly check the sheet to take care of clearing fines from student accounts. Let the student know that the appropriate amount of fines will be waived within 2 days.

Food donations can go on the little desk by the course reserves.
